We work to conserve, restore and maintain the old temple site of Tabo Monastery. This beautiful and unique cultural site was first established in 996 A.D. and consists of nine temples and several stupas and cave shrines located on the mountain slopes of Spiti Valley. The earthen buildings and shrines are decorated with murals and stupas that have a high artistic and cultural value.
The foundations of the monastery go back to the time of the Purang Guge Kingdom, the period of the second spreading of Buddhism in Tibet. Tabo Monastery had a core role in the exchange and debates that took place at this time between the Tibetan and Indian Buddhist traditions, and in the development of Buddhism.
Alongside supporting the preservation of the old temple site, we support Tabo Monastery’s efforts to enable young people in Spiti Valley to build their future, through attendance at the monastery’s school (Serkong School).
